| Retail therapy at the mall now includes cosmetic surgery
Andrew Rudnick snickered when he first saw a medical spa offering Botox and laser hair-removal services on a visit to a Las Vegas mall in 2002. He laughed at the thought of someone - anyone - shopping for the latest fashions, grabbing a bite to eat and then, oh yeah, strolling in for a quick shot of Botox to zap out a nasty wrinkle. "I couldn't understand why anybody in a mall would walk in and have their legs lasered, never mind Botox," he recalled. He parked himself on a bench near the spa and watched in amazement as shoppers strolled in. He owned a weight-loss and laser center in Boston at the time, and the sight was a revelation. "I counted the traffic in and out and saw the revenue." Returning to Boston, he scouted retail locations. He dropped the weight-loss part of his business to focus on skin care and laser treatments, renamed the company and opened his first Sleek MedSpa that same year.
Boca mall officials announce plans for more security
A new police substation and enhanced surveillance-camera system may be in store for the Town Center at Boca Raton, mall officials announced Friday. Plans for the substation were submitted recently to Boca Raton officials and await approval. Plans for the cameras have not been submitted yet, mall spokeswoman Billie Scott said. She said she expects the city to approve both plans and that the substation should be completed by March. Mall officials said the Friday announcement about the substation and the security improvements already were in the works, and are not related the killings of a mother and her daughter at Town Center last month. .
fashion magazine assistants
The show, which the CW unofficially describes as "The Devil Wears Prada" meets "The Assistant," is eyed as a potential companion piece for "Top Model." "It is a competition show about aspiring assistants looking to become assistant editors at a fashion magazine," Mok said. "At the same time they're trying to prove themselves as aspiring fashionistas, that they have a sense of style and savvyness, all the things to make it in the fashion world." In each episode, the contestants will compete in two challenges, an individual competition and a team competition, in which each squad will submit a page for "The Book," a mock edition of the magazine. The losing team's page will end up in the trash, and one of its team members will be eliminated. The page from the other team will be included in "The Book." The winner of the competition will land a job in the fashion industry.
