Five Wal-Mart Supercenters planned for Victor Valley

Five Wal-Mart Supercenters are expected to open in the Victor Valley over the next two years. Three stores are proposed for Victorville, one for Apple Valley and one for Hesperia. All will be Supercenters, which means they’ll be nearly double the size of a regular Wal-Mart and will sell food, including fresh produce. In Victorville, the project that is furthest along will be in the Dunia Plaza shopping center on Bear Valley Road, just south of the mall. It will include a Supercenter combined with a Sam’s Club, as well as three additional parcels for future development. The city anticipates approving the project in either March or April, after Wal-Mart completes their environmental review, said Yvonne Hester, spokeswoman for the City of Victorville. If approved, the center could be open as early as next spring.

Be crime-savvy when you shop

Editor's note: This week's shooting at the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Neb., underscores the public safety issues that large gathering places like shopping centers face.

Today, the Sunday Record explores crime trends at our regional shopping malls. What we found is that larcencies, such as shoplifting and car break-ins and thefts, far outnumber crimes against individuals.

While our region did have a mall shooting in Kingston in February 2005, incidents involving guns or assaults at Hudson Valley shopping centers were rare, according to police reports from January 2006 through July 2007.

Hoff Jewelers seeks bankruptcy shelter

Hoff Jewelers Inc. of New Brighton has filed for Chapter 11 protection from creditors under federal bankruptcy law, listing a debt of about $3.5 million and net assets of $50,000 or less.

The 70-year-old, privately owned business, which operates stores in five Twin Cities shopping malls under the name "Hoff Jewelers and Diamond Importers," filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in St. Paul in hopes of reorganizing and emerging from bankruptcy by closing one or two of its stores, said Stevan Hoff, CEO and president. He declined to disclose which stores might be closed.

"I'm pretty confident we can make our way out of Chapter 11," Hoff said in an interview. "It's just a matter of how many stores we can retain." The company has stores in Rosedale Center in Roseville, Burnsville Center, Maplewood Mall, Northtown Mall in Blaine and Eden Prairie Center.
