Water Transport 1991-2000

Tiger Securities published through the mass media a statement, in which the appointment of Lugovets was qualified as a "seizure of power" in the DVMP by supporters of Nazdratenko.

In August, the chairman of the council of directors of Vostoktransflot, Anatoly Milashevich, demanded in a letter to the Procecutor General's office of the Russian Federation to start an investigation of a misappropriation of the company by the governor-backed forces, requesting that the highest law- enforcement agency in Russia "send an investigator to Vladivostok to restore law and order."

In September, Taisiya Ponomareva, a legal adviser to Anatoly Milashevich, was murdered in Vladivostok. Neither the killers nor those who gave the order to kill have been found.

2000
In March, sailors from refrigerator vessels belonging to Vostoktransflot, seized in the port of St Petersburg, threatened the city authorities with a hunger strike and blocked the waterway with boats as their wages were not paid.

A stable trend in nominal consumption inequality can mask a narrowing of real or "utility-adjusted" consumption inequality. Indeed, according to happiness researchers, inequality in self-reported "life satisfaction" has been shrinking in wealthy market democracies, America included, suggesting that the quality of lives across the income scale are becoming more similar, not less.

Mr Krugman's outrage that some people are so fantastically wealthy leads him to completely miss the relevant question and to instead quote the non-economist Robert Frank, a journalist who chronicles the lifestyles of the rich and famous, as if something pertinent was thereby established. But Mr Frank's contribution--the observation that the mega-rich are able largely to live apart from the rest of us, if they choose--is hardly new, or telling.

Archers podcast hits the target

Long-running radio soap The Archers has apparently become the BBC's most popular podcast.

The Daily Telegraph revealed more than a million episodes of the daily drama have been downloaded in less than a month.

The Archers editor Vanessa Whitburn is quoted as saying: "Many people think that our listeners are behind the times but it's a total fallacy that our listeners are not techno-savvy.

"Lots of our listeners are extremely busy people and they want to be able to listen to The Archers when they want and podcasts are perfect."

She added: "You also have to remember that this programme has always been ahead when it comes to technology. We were the first to go stereo and digital. People often forget that."

The Archers is the longest-running radio soap, with more than 15,000 episodes broadcast.

Lyric shows improvising talent with 'Falstaff'

When the curtain rose eight years ago on Lyric Opera of Chicago's new production of "Falstaff," Verdi's final opera, the audience was treated to a sumptuous, ingenious and definitive production with Bryn Terfel, the world's leading baritone, making his American role debut as Shakespeare's Fat Knight.

As envisioned by director Olivier Tambosi and designer Frank Philipp Schloessmann, this most intricate of the prolific master composer's works took every cue from the music; it recognized that in handling the creation of three great-souled geniuses -- Verdi, the librettist Arrigio Boito and Falstaff's creator, Shakespeare himself -- care must be taken and extraneous fussing is absurd.

Adrenalina brings surfing to a mall near you

There's a new place for South Florida surfers to ride the waves: inside Miami International Mall.

The surfing spot is Adrenalina, a new chain of extreme sports stores owned by former Parlux Fragrances Chairman and Chief Executive Ilia Lekach. The centerpiece of Adrenalina's store is the ''FlowRider,'' a simulated surfing attraction also used on many Royal Caribbean cruise ships, as well as at resorts and amusement parks.

But Lekach claims he's the first to try surfing inside a regional shopping mall.

''This is a retail phenomenon,'' said Lekach, who resigned from the Fort Lauderdale-based Parlux almost a year ago amid battles with shareholders and to focus on Adrenalina. ``It's retail entertainment, which is what people want. It's not enough today to put your merchandise in a store and wait for people to come in.''

The first Adrenalina store opened in Orlando in Oct.

Huntington Town worker gets 5 years' probation

A woman who fleeced the Town of Huntington of nearly $70,000 while she worked there as a building department cashier was sentenced to 5 years' probation yesterday in Suffolk County Court.

Suzette Pinckney-Black, 47, of Huntington, pleaded guilty to second-degree grand larceny in November. Yesterday, she repaid $30,000 and agreed to return the remaining $38,722 in the next five years.

Assistant District Attorney Mark Murray said Pinckney-Black stole the money - cash and checks meant for processing fees - between 2002 and 2006. Later, Murray said, Pinckney-Black omitted the funds from ledgers. The scam was discovered by town auditors in July, after other town employees noticed discrepancies.
