| Adrenalina brings surfing to a mall near you
There's a new place for South Florida surfers to ride the waves: inside Miami International Mall. The surfing spot is Adrenalina, a new chain of extreme sports stores owned by former Parlux Fragrances Chairman and Chief Executive Ilia Lekach. The centerpiece of Adrenalina's store is the ''FlowRider,'' a simulated surfing attraction also used on many Royal Caribbean cruise ships, as well as at resorts and amusement parks. But Lekach claims he's the first to try surfing inside a regional shopping mall. ''This is a retail phenomenon,'' said Lekach, who resigned from the Fort Lauderdale-based Parlux almost a year ago amid battles with shareholders and to focus on Adrenalina. ``It's retail entertainment, which is what people want. It's not enough today to put your merchandise in a store and wait for people to come in.'' The first Adrenalina store opened in Orlando in Oct.

Austin police have arrested a woman accused of sexually assaulting her stepson for about eight years, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. The woman was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child, a first-degree felony for which she could be sentenced to life in prison. Bail was set at $30,000. The woman's name is not included in this report to protect the identity of the child. On Dec. 9, the child told his father of the abuse, which happened up to 50 times, according to the affidavit. The father confronted the woman the next day, according to the document. A few days later, police said the woman confessed to assaulting the child from the time he was 9 years old until he was 16. Arctic blast pounds NE Iowa
In the Hampton-Dumont School District, students were released at 10:30 a.m. but officials decided against sending buses on rural routes following advice from the Iowa State Patrol. Those students stayed at the middle school until officials felt travel was safe, said Shelleen Meyer, the superintendent's secretary. Parents, though, were welcome to collect their children at any time, she added.Jerry Martinek, principal at Dike-New Hartford Junior High in New Hartford, planned to wait at the school until all his buses returned. Classes ended at 11 a.m., and students were gone when Martinek got word of the situation in Hampton."I think from what we hear to the west we got out in the nick of time," he said. The forecast prompted administrators for Waterloo and Cedar Falls schools to cancel classes for the day.
Reactor posed unacceptable risk, Keen says
In the nuclear safety watchdog's place will be installed a businessperson, an entrepreneur, someone who can weigh profit to loss, and someone who would prefer to live a very long way from Chalk River. Kind of like that Burns guy Homer eerrr Harper hired at AECL, who took a runner/was fired, just when things were starting to melt down at the old reactor. Where is that guy? Has he got his golden parachute cheque yet? He didn't show up at Committee... maybe his cheque didn't reach him. Just like in Bhopal. Just like Three Mile. Just like Chernobyl. Everybody knows the Harper Conservatives couldn't care less about the people in Chalk River, Ottawa, Ontario or in Quebec (just across the river) and if a nuclear accident occurred they could always blame the entrepreneur.
PowerShot G9 digital camera
Canon's G series has converted many a serious film shutterbug to digital photography. Launched in 2000 with the PowerShot G1, the sturdy G line helped establish digital photography as something more than a novelty. But judging from the latest entry, the Canon PowerShot G9, the line may have outlived its usefulness. Make no mistake—this serious-looking black brick of a camera is capable of producing great images. But the G9 is out of sync with the marketplace, offering few compelling advantages, and some distinct disadvantages compared to cheaper point-and-shoots and comparably priced DSLRs. Improvements over the preceding G7 are minimal and not all advantageous. Canon deserves cheers for including RAW mode shooting, which retains more information than JPEG. But the new image sensor merely crams in two more megapixels that nobody needs, bringing the G9 to a gratuitous 12.1 megapixels.

People coming to campus can easily avoid the front office, a security issue, and the gym and other buildings are aging and in need of repair. These problems and more will be solved when the school gets a $8.8 million upgrade starting in July. Work is expected to be done by October 2008. The project is funded by the bond issue that passed in 2006 and is part of a larger district effort to modernize its buildings. A new way to commute Local participants in the National Bike to Work Day certainly had the weather on their side. Under sunny skies and with a cool morning breeze, more than 790 commuters left their cars at home and biked to work on Friday, May 18. The event encourages people to find an alternate route to work, either on a bike or on the bus, said Debbie Anderson of Community Transit, one of the sponsors of Bike to Work Day in Snohomish County.
