| Swimmer Thorpe to be in torch relay
A total of 80 people, including past and present Olympians, will take part in the only Australian leg of the relay on April 24 in Canberra. Thorpe won a record nine Olympic medals before his retirement in November 2006. Other former Olympians taking part include Clarke, who carried the flame around the Melbourne Cricket Ground before lighting the cauldron at the 1956 Olympics, and marathon runner Robert De Castella, who competed at four Olympics. Current Australian Olympians will be represented by swimmers Jodie Henry and Alice Mills and archery bronze medalist Tim Cuddihy. Canberra will be the only Australian destination for the flame in what has become the world's longest Olympic torch relay. Olympic organizers say 22,000 torchbearers will carry the flame on its journey from Greece to Beijing for the opening ceremony on Aug.
Alberta is the promised land, or so we have been told-
My parents instilled in me a work ethic that is a common thread of fellow Martimers that I encounter while living here in Toronto. We leave because we want to work and come back to the place we call home. I am proud of my maritime roots and hold my head high. Posted 29/01/08 at 8:47 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .
City audit shows upturn
That's about half as many major problems as were outlined in the fiscal 2006 audit report. The deficit in the general fund hasn't gone away either. But at $3.6 million, it is smaller than the $4.4 million deficit of the previous year. Better looking numbers have prompted Macon officials to proclaim some progress, even if the city is not yet where they would like it to be. Mayor Robert Reichert allows that the city is "doing a little better." Councilman Mike Cranford, chairman of the council's Appropriations Committee, said he is "extremely pleased" that Macon is headed in the right direction. Finance Director Adah Roberts said the city must focus now on keeping all its funds in the black. "We've stopped the bleeding," she said.
McCain: Still Losing GOPs?
About the Florida and Michigan delegations: On TV theyv'e been confidently talking about Hillary's call for seating the Michigan and Florida delegations as if that will be her trump card at a contested convention. She'll almost certainly win the Florida vote next week, and she's already won in Michigan. But I don't see how the convention can fairly award Hillary the delegates from those states after the DNC got her competitors to pledge not to campaign in those states' primaries. Doesn't that discredit those primaries? Or should Obama and Edwards be punished because they obeyed their party? ... Maybe the convention should seat some Florida and Michigan delegates, but if so you'd think the party would make those states choose them anew through an actual contested election, caucus, or convention.
