250-acre project in works

Chattanooga, Tenn.-based CBL & Associates Properties Inc. confirmed Friday it has withdrawn as developer of the 850,000-square-foot open-air mall south of Ohio 48 that was supposed to be the second phase of the Rivers Crossing project.

But Goffstein said CBL's decision to withdraw won't halt the second phase of the multiyear Rivers Crossing project, although it may change the mix of retailers.

"We're still working on a large project there, up to 800,000 to 900,000 square feet," he said. "There's a lot of interest from other power center retailers, groceries and junior-type anchors."

Several local retail developers said the South Lebanon area is still growing rapidly, but doesn't have the heavy population density favored by large department store chains such as Dillard's, Macy's and Iowa-based Von Maur, an upscale chain reportedly interested in expanding into the area.

Getting rid of liquor stash `a nightmare'

During his 30 years in banking, Hunter Padgett has never had a bigger challenge: how to shut down the largest liquor store in the Keys.

The repossessed inventory of the failed Kraus' Supermarket Liquors & Deli includes nearly 70,000 bottles of spirits and wines -- and a life-size plastic Captain Morgan pirate.

''This has been a nightmare,'' said Padgett, CEO and president of Marathon-based Marine Bank, which financed the venture that failed last July after only about a year of operation.

But Padgett -- with the help of attorneys, inventory specialists, bank employees, his two daughters and their friends -- has prepared nearly $1 million worth of alcohol for a three-day Internet auction that runs Tuesday through Thursday at www.bid4assets.com/liquorauction.

The questions that come at Christmas

But this month of family gatherings and office parties also provides various grinches ample opportunities to pick at your ego with a variety of pointed, cloying comments.

Aunt Marge might corner you and your spouse smooching under the mistletoe and ask "Are you ever going to have kids?"

A "concerned" cousin Kate could offer the always dubious "Did you lose weight" just as you're about to swallow a chunk of ham at dinner.

And don't be surprised by a saucy coworker who serves up this delightful inquiry during a seasonal party, "Hey, you still married?"

In social settings among people who are just comfortable enough with you to say what they really feel, conversations can be booby-trapped with commentary bordering on personal directives.
