I'll have a Five Things I Think at the Super Bowl today through Friday, then a quick analysis of the Hall of Fame voting late Saturday afternoon. Now for today's Five Things: 1. I think this was about the dumbest thing I've heard this week so far. When ESPN's Emmitt Smith was asked on TV about Plaxico Burress' prediction of a 23-17 Giants victory, Smith said: "His prediction will get him double-coverage.'' I can only hope Smith either mis-spoke or was somehow exaggerating, because to imagine that the Patriots would be moved to change their defensive plan against Burress because of something he said prior to the game is ridiculous. 2. I think Adalius Thomas has totally bought into the Pats' preparation-is-everything stuff. "Sunday's game will be won long before Sunday,'' he said this morning.
Union Gap preps for large retail boom
The new Costco warehouse store in Union Gap may have new neighbors over the next few years. White-Leasure Development Co., a Boise-based firm, has two parcels totaling about 40 acres along Valley Mall Boulevard on contract from the Hackett and Johnson families with plans to develop it for regional retail. The property is located catty-corner to the new Costco, next to the site of the new Bud Clary Toyota dealership. Larry Leasure, chief executive officer and chairman of White-Leasure, said the company has looked at the Yakima market for years. The company's past projects, which span eight Western U.S. states, include The Colonnade shopping center in the Tri-Cities, The Grove Hotel in downtown Boise and several business parks. "There's certainly been a demand for additional retail," he said.
Tiffany hit by flagging US Christmas sales
Analysts have cited retailers such as Tiffany as particularly vulnerable. Shares in the group are already down by more than a third since the summer when the US began to suffer from the fall-out from the sub-prime mortgage crisis and tightening credit conditions. Yesterday, Tiffany lowered its profit forecast for the year and said that it expects earnings per share of between $2.25 and $2.28, compared with earlier forecasts of $2.25 to $2.30. Both forecasts have excluded an exceptional gain from the sale of its Tokyo flagship store and the jeweller's recent deal with Swatch to make Tiffany watches. Tiffany also reduced its full-year sales growth forecast to 14 per cent from 15 per cent. During the two-month November and December period, Tiffany said that total sales in the US had increased 4 per cent to $449.1 million and admitted that those sales were derived from fewer customers.
New In the Neighborhood
The store was closed for a brief while, but is open for business now. Just a note about The Primrose Cottage: It was established about 13 years ago in Dallas Center before owner Tonia Slack relocated the store to the Urbandale space about two years ago. Hours for both the Urbandale and Clive stores are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays; 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays; and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Call the Clive store at 331-9037 and the Urbandale store at 255-4322. .

Monday wild card
Apart from not being as smart, talented, or handsome as Dave (above), I have two other key disadvantages: I live and work in Spokane, and don't get over to North Idaho much. So I don't have much of a handle (pun intended) on the local political scene. I try to keep up with the blog, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know what I'm talking about when it comes to Gozzer Ranch yacht wars or Marty Fortier. I'm doing this in addition to other work, so I'm not able to spend much time crusing around looking for things to post. And so - your help this week is crucial to keeping the blog flowing. Don't be shy about suggesting items to post, and please don't worry about insulting my intelligence or whatever by explaining at length why a particular post is noteworthy.
