Radio Talk

Do you miss Jimmy Baron, who has been off the airwaves since March? The former Morning X man is still seeking a job but Steak Shapiro & the gang at Mayhem in the AM are letting him sit in for Mike Bell Thursday morning on 790/The Zone. (It was originally set for Wednesday but was changed Tuesday.)

Baron, who almost subbed for the Kimmer a few months back but got in trouble making fun of the Kimmer's listeners, is nothing but complimentary to Shapiro and his brethren. "We've been friends for a long time," he said, of Shapiro. "I think Mayhem is one of the best guy shows for adult men in the country."

He's an expert on pop culture and the Atlanta Thrashers and since he's from Chicago, he can throw his two cents in about the Super Bowl-bound Chicago Bears, but he said, "if they start talking college basketball, I'll be going over to Starbucks."

Evacuating our local hospital, skilled nursing facility

As we were making plans to evacuate, there were 16 patients in the hospital and 60 patients and residents in the skilled nursing facility. With the cooperation and approval from facilities in Oceanside, Vista and Corona, hospital patients and skilled nursing facility patients/residents were transferred outside the immediate threat of fires.

VN: What was the age range of patients involved?

MM: The patients and residents were all over the age of 18.

VN: How were they transported?

MM: The patients were transported in ambulances and transportation provided by the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District. They were accompanied by clinical personnel and were transported with their medical records and a supply of medications.

Egg trade wobbles as bird flu hits exports

NEW DELHI: India, the world's second largest producer of eggs, has seen about a 50 per cent drop in exports in the past two weeks as an outbreak of bird flu in an eastern state has undermined confidence, trade officials said.

United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are among a clutch of neighbouring countries that have banned egg imports from India.

"We have suffered 150 million rupees ($3.75 million) of losses on commercial egg exports alone for the last two weeks only," said Prasanna Pedgaonkar, deputy general manager of Venkateshwara Hatcheries, the country's largest poultry group.

He estimated India's total export losses at 700 to 800 million rupees ($20.3 million).

Bird flu has spread to 13 of West Bengal's 19 districts and authorities in the communist-ruled state said they were culling sick chickens in a private farm about an hour's drive from Kolkata, one of India's biggest cities.

Righting wrongs in the sheriff's office

As you undertake consideration of a replacement for Sheriff Mike Carona I hope you will do so with due diligence and thoughtful, rather than expedient deliberation. The department has been functioning at a satisfactory, if not excellent or optimum level. Here are some issues I would like you to consider:

Should the position of sheriff be an elected position or appointed, where accountability to you as the Board enables swift and effective action should that position be abused or have negative consequences for the Orange County population as a whole? Let's not have another fiasco.

You need not feel time pressure to replace the sheriff in the next few weeks with someone like Ralph Martin, Jo Ann Galisky or other readily available folks.

Let's get the best person for the job who has not just a vision, but has implemented their vision and has proved results.

Financed Medical Care: Only Fair

This is the only sustainable way to bring down the high costs.

Finally, the myth that large numbers of patients are being forced into bankruptcy due to medical expenses is simply not true. Recently (July 2007), Todd Zywicki, Professor of Law at George Mason University School of Law, testified to the U.S. Congress that this was simply not the case. His three central points were:

1) "There is No Evidence That There Has Been An Increase in the Frequency or Severity of Job Loss or Income Interruption as a Result of Health Problems"

2) "There is Little Evidence That Medical Debt Is a Major Causal Factor in Bankruptcy Filings"

3) "[T]here is no evidence that lack of medical insurance is a major causal factor in bankruptcy filings."

His testimony is available online at: http://mason.gmu.edu/tzywick2/Medical%20Bankruptcies%20Testimony%20July%2017%202007.doc.
