JFK's Daughter Endorses Obama

It isn't that the other candidates are not experienced or knowledgeable. But this year, that may not be enough. We need a change in the leadership of this country - just as we did in 1960.

While not claiming to know what's in Caroline's mind, I can only suspect that she may also see a little bit of what her brother, JFK, Jr. might have brought to the table. If he had not died himself so tragically in 1999, we very well could have seen another Kennedy in the political arena now. If he had lived he would be 48 now, a year older than Barack Obama.

This endorsement may not carry much political weight or any extended influence. She's not a Superdelegate and other than her public works that also include being Director of both the Commission on Presidential Debates and of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, she's not well-known outside of a core, established Democratic set.

Mall that was scene of shooting in Omaha reopens with tighter security

OMAHA, Neb. — With extra security on hand and holiday shoppers waiting at the doors, the Westroads Mall reopened Saturday morning, three days after a gunman killed eight people and himself at the mall's Von Maur store.

The store, however, remained closed. A spokeswoman said there is no timetable for its reopening, but the company hopes it will be soon.

Yellow holiday lights brightened Von Maur's exterior, but its main entryway remained dark.

Outside the mall, two Red Cross vans and a Salvation Army unit were set up near the food court entrance.

Early shoppers faced wind-chill temperatures of only two degrees above zero before trickling into the food court or the mall proper, even before most of the retailers had raised their security gates.

She set out as she had done every Sunday afternoon for years. She locked her door, turned to the weather, and held the hand rail as she stepped carefully down from the porch. Once on the ground she adjusted her hat on her gray head. As this was a winter day in the Christmas season, a cold day, she also adjusted her coat. Had it been raining, she would have pulled a large lawn and leaf bag, as if it were a poncho, over her head and upper body. Most times she shouldered her hand bag. This day she also shouldered a bulging plastic shopping bag. She walked along the dirt road that would lead her to the paved road that would lead her to the highway. Her only company was her shadow, small and indistinct at her feet. She walked without the deliberate care of someone unfamiliar with the terrain, but neither was her gait quick.
