| Robertson's concrete plant is the wrong site at the wrong time
The lobbyist for the company noted that sales tax from Wal-Mart is paid to Oceanside even though Wal-Mart's headquarters are in Arkansas. His analysis is flat-out wrong.According to an analysis from the State Board of Equalization, sales are taxed where the cash register is. Robertson's cash register is in Riverside. Since all of Robertson's sales take place in Riverside, sales tax must be allocated to Riverside, not Oceanside. Robertson's may promise us sales tax, but their tax records are confidential and protected by law. Can we really trust them to allocate any money to our town when the law doesn't require it?Some may point out there is a very old, dusty, noisy concrete plant next door to the proposed Robertson's site. That plant operates under a conditional permit and operations must cease after 2017.
Retailers encroach on other holidays in rush to start Christmas ...
Move over goblins and ghosts. Santa Claus is encroaching on your holiday. Macy's Inc. put up its "Holiday Lane" Christmas decor shop at its Chicago flagship on Sept. 9. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. cut prices on its "top 12 toys for Christmas" on Oct. 1. And L.L. Bean launched its first-ever online holiday gift shop on Monday. With the crucial months of November and December accounting for as much as 25 percent of a retailer's annual sales, it is little wonder that retailers are doing their best to stretch out the season. Yet some retail experts are starting to question the strategy, worried that stores are resorting to early holiday start dates to make up for an industrywide outbreak of bland merchandise and ho-hum service. .
Year in review: Tulsa market weathers nationwide housing slump
Depressing news about the state of the U.S. real estate market was in ample supply in 2007, as coastal markets continued to decline and an overwhelming number of subprime mortgage foreclosures has taken down several financial institutions and continues to threaten the overall economy. But that's the country as a whole. The Tulsa-area housing market weathered the tough times with rising home values and more modest drops in sales and construction compared to a record-breaking 2006. Through October, the last month for which statistics are available from the Greater Tulsa Association of Realtors, home sales are off 2006 levels by 5.3 percent, though the association says it's optimistic the gap will close somewhat by December. Home sellers have blamed the drop on buyer skittishness brought on by the bad national real estate news.
Silver Star awards for two Fort Lewis soldiers for Iraq combat
FORT LEWIS, Wash. -- The Army is awarding the Silver Star to two Stryker brigade soldiers at Fort Lewis for their service in the Iraq war. The Army base scheduled a ceremony Wednesday to present the nation's third-highest award for combat valor to Staff Sgt. Jon Hilliard and Sgt. 1st Class Ismael Iban. They are members of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division that returned in September from 15 months in Iraq. The Army says although Hilliard was injured by a roadside bomb he retrieved a machine gun and held off the enemy so other wounded soldiers could be evacuated. The Army says Iban and other soldiers fended off a suicide attack on a security station and established a helicopter landing zone to evacuate injured soldiers. --- Information from: The Olympian, http://www.theolympian.com .

Words and lyrics by Cash
That is what Michael McFadden, artistic producer of Phoenix Entertainment, has discovered now that his company has put together a touring production of “Ring of Fire." “I just don't think this show belonged in that (New York City) market," McFadden said. “It was popular with audiences (during tryout runs) before it got to New York, and while we're just a few weeks into this tour, it's proving to be popular now. I guess Johnny Cash and New York City just wasn't a natural fit." A little surprising, given the popularity of the Academy Award-winning film .
