Delta woman shares $37-million win

An office manager for a B.C. forestry company is more than $18 million richer after a holiday visit with her brother in Ontario.

Alycia Heitt, 41, of Delta, B.C., bought a winning Lotto 6/49 ticket with her brother Larry McAuliffe in a Peterborough, Ont., shopping mall on Dec. 30.

At a ceremony in Toronto Friday the two were unveiled as the winners of a jackpot worth more than $37 million.

Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road Becomes Busy Corridor

Although names were never discussed, it might have been called Middletown or Centerville, a seventh town in the center of the Island that some envisioned as the future social and economic center of the Vineyard.

A 1972 study from the engineering firm Metcalf and Eddy suggested the creation of this town, both as a means to protect the integrity of the existing down-Island centers and to keep large-scale development away from the more vulnerable ecology and geography of the up-Island towns.

The study, commissioned by the Dukes County Planning and Economic Development Commission, the predecessor to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, concluded that the most logical place for the new town would be along the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road where the new regional high school had been built a decade earlier.

YOOPER OLYMPICS: The road to Beijing; Chinese athletes able to train ...

Lu Yan smiled. Just 15 minutes earlier, he had experienced a sight he won't soon forget. Yan, chief interpreter for a group of Chinese athletes who have been training with American athletes at the U.S. Olympic Education Center in Marquette, was welcomed at the entrance to Wells Township School by the entire student body.

Enrollment: 18.

Yan lives in Beijing, population 15 million.

"Beijing is a big city, like New York," Yan said. "Marquette is a small city and very beautiful. In Beijing, it is busy everyday and you might (hear) noise.

"To live in China, you must love it."

The boy returned Yan's smile with one of his own. He knows about loving where you live.

EU Proposes New Simpler Food Labels

Kyprianou said it would take another five years to produce a report on how the alcohol industry should regulate its labeling.

So-called alcopops, which mix fruit juice and soft drinks with alcohol, are included partly because they target the key market of teenage consumers.

The proposals will now be taken up by the European Parliament and must win approval from member nations before they can be turned into law.

All packaged foodstuffs from outside the European Union would have to meet the labeling criteria. In the U.S., food labels list serving size, calories and nutrient information, including fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrate and protein content.

Current labeling systems in the EU, some going back 30 years, are considered too perplexing or downright illegible for the consumer.

Only 67 days left as local charities aim for Christmas

It's not even Halloween but already local charities are planning their annual Christmas campaigns.

Representatives of a number of agencies attended a luncheon Friday at the U.S. Marine Corps League Toys for Tots warehouse -- almost everyone except Santa himself -- to prevent duplication of services.

Marine Corps League commandant Reggie Knight said there are still 1,296 toys left over from last year. Eleven Marines had to inspect toys made in China for lead, after the latest scare, Knight said. Only one toy had to be taken to the dump.

Knight said he went to the national headquarters of the Marine Corps League in Quantico, Va., and received designation of the local group as an independent chapter. They will hand out toys for all of Nye County, from the Yomba Indian reservation near Ione in the far northwest, to children of prisoners confined at Indian Springs.
