For some, layaway option still a keeper
Karen Tiller pushed a shopping cart down a short, drab hallway, holding two sets of camouflage jackets, matching pants and a box of T-Fal pots and pans. The word "Layaway" stretches across the top of the hallway's entrance. One by one, Tiller lifted her selections -- some Christmas presents for family -- onto a counter. A cashier totaled the prices. Tiller's order came to $146. She paid $40 down on the items and left, empty-handed. By putting her items on layaway, Tiller arranged to come back in two weeks to pay on the total purchase. By Dec. 7, Tiller and others who have items on layaway at Kmart must claim their merchandise, paying for the orders in full. Kmart is one of few Roanoke Valley retailers that still offer layaway. Stores that have it include T.J.
In the world of online community, one authoritative man can dictate ...
When the Bay Area's Summer of Love is discussed, the chat chiefly regards the music, politics, and drugs that shaped a generation — but that discussion is nearly always focused on rock 'n' roll. That all-important year of 1967, however, was also a marker for those outside of the Grateful Dead paradigm. Important artists who heeded the calls of '60s watersheds John Coltrane, Miles Davis, or Muddy Waters influenced the season significantly, too, and are therefore due their share of recognition. One such musician is blues harmonica icon Charlie Musselwhite. Since the mid-1960s, Mississippi-born Musselwhite has been one of the head honchos of harmonica. He possesses a deep, dense tone that's part Mississippi roots, part Chicago electricity. Born in 1944, Musselwhite cut his teeth playing harp — hepcat slang for harmonica — with legendary acoustic bluesmen Furry Lewis and Big Joe Williams in Memphis.
Derby spoils settled in a familiar way
An 82nd minute free-kick he swept invitingly into the box seemed certain to be turned in at the back post by Chris Hogg, only for the Hibs central defender to pull up under pressure from Christos Karipidis. Afterwards Paatelainen claimed Hogg had been impeded. Such a reading of the incident wasn't disputed by Frail, who had a sinking feeling that Steve Banks' goal was about to be breached as the ball was curled over by Rankin. "There might have been a wee bit in it (the challenge by Karipidis], but the referee never gave it, thankfully." As much as their form, Hearts' luck might be changing.JEEPERS KEEPERSHibs goalies struck by the Tynecastle derby curse:Simon BrownThought a Lee Miller header was drifting wide and let it go - only to watch in horror as the ball drifted into the corner of his net.
