Profile: Samak Sundaravej

Victorious in nationwide polls in December 2007, Mr Samak may now be in a position to fulfil his pledge, setting him on a possible collision course with the country's military elite.

Veteran lawmaker

Born in June 1935 in the Thai capital, Bangkok, Samak Sundaravej comes from an aristocratic family.

He graduated with a law degree from the prestigious Thammasat University and entered politics in his thirties, first as a member of the Democrat Party.

Arroyo cuts five-day ASEAN trip to Singapore

President Arroyo has shortened her five-day visit to Singapore after she decided to forgo the commemorative summit between the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations and the European Union.

Assistant Secretary Louie Cruz, director-general of the ASEAN Affairs Desk of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), said the President was originally scheduled to return to the Philippines Thursday after the ASEAN-EU meeting but decided against it.

Mrs. Arroyo assigned DFA Secretary Alberto Romulo to attend the meeting reportedly because she felt her presence is no longer needed there.

Cruz added that tropical storm Mina (international codename Mitag) also prompted the President to return home earlier than scheduled.

The DFA official said that changes in the President's schedule were not unusual.

Christmas Stroll 'superbly' successful

The event went absolutely superbly," said Brian O'Connor, co-chairman of the Elburn Chamber of Commerce stroll committee.
The event's host, the Elburn Chamber of Commerce, gauges the turnout based on the number of children visiting Santa Claus at the Elburn Town and Country Public Library, a stroll highlight. This year, the total was 1,100, library director Mary Lynn Alms said.
In 2005, children stopping to see Santa numbered 1,000. Last year, a heavy snowstorm kept many people from going to the event, whose library Santa had just 600 visitors.
The stroll was not on the same evening as Geneva's holiday walk this year, which in addition to the better weather likely contributed to high attendance, O'Connor said.
For several years, the Elburn stroll has coincided with Geneva's walk.

Low interest rates does not mean that people...

This was fine when USA was the prime innovator and mover of markets. Alas no more. American goods are not competitive. Hence the budget deficit.

The aetiology of bubbles, like inflation, is multi-factorial. Gullible workers are encouraged to invest in unsuitable and risky investments by speculators and financial whizz kids with ulterior motives.

Easy credit is more of a bubble generator than low interest rates per se.

All the banks that are involved in the current crisis have been awarded 'Bank of the year' ' Investment Bank of the year etc by various financial institutions that are supposed to know more than the avarage Joe Public. Computers can generate thuosands of indexes, graphs and other data - you just have to feed it with some junk.

The Japanese did have a bubble but they have learnt from their past mistakes.

Greg Williams 'Hammers' The Ticket

On Friday, October 12, the most popular sports talk radio show in the history of Dallas prepared for a routine remote broadcast at Addison's Blackfin Pub. KTCK-1310 AM The Ticket afternoon co-host Mike Rhyner arrived on time. Longtime sidekick Greg Williams, however, was alarmingly tardy.

Williams—"The Hammer" to a legion of loony fans that consistently makes the irreverent guy-talk station No. 1 in the market—finally appeared, albeit noticeably fidgety and audibly discombobulated. And then, just one segment into the four-hour show, he abruptly up and left.

No one's sure where Williams had been. But now we know where he was headed—down a dangerous, dark detour toward self-destruction. One that, according to multiple sources, ultimately landed him in rehab for a cocaine problem.

Wolff's vision: Goodbye foul popups

A couple things became clearer to me about Lew Wolff's Fremont vision at his Commonwealth Club speech last night. One is that Cisco Field, if and when built, won't resemble anything in MLB today. He thinks AT&T Park and its cousins are too big. He wants the intimacy of the smallest park in the majors (32,000 capacity) with ticket prices "a little bit less than the Giants" to produce a packed, loud house. "Our whole goal is to get the fan experience as close to the field as possible." It's a tempting vision that will encourage season ticket sales.

The tight quarters will eliminate part of the advantage the Coliseum gives the A's, the big foul territory that produces outs and helps keep the pitchers from wearing down. (The other part of the advantage is the Bay Area's cool summers).
